WHEN WE DISCUSS INQUIRY and how it invites our true nature to display its inherent possibilities, we’re talking about a magical journey. It’s a journey filled with mystery, beauty, exquisiteness, and significance. Most of us spend our lives within a thin layer of reality, unaware of the deeper realms of our consciousness. What we call emotional reality—the layer where most people believe human richness lies—is only onion-skin deep compared to the totality of reality. Beneath this thin layer of emotions and thoughts lie indescribable beauty and freedom. Many people wander in that onion-skin layer forever, but in the inquiry process, it’s a layer we need to go through and not get stuck in. When our will is fully engaged, our spacecruiser can go very far—all the way to the most distant reaches of the experiential universe. With the Red Essence alone, you might begin with excitement and energy, but you probably won’t get very far because your energy will fluctuate and your ship’s engine will run unevenly. You’ll find yourself stopping and starting many times. The hard work in inquiry begins after you’ve been on the journey for a while. So the White Essence is what gives you the steadiness and the staying power needed to stay focused and open as you traverse the long distances in plumbing the depths of your experience. It provides you with maturity and a sense of responsibility that supports you in pursuing an issue fully instead of jumping from one thing to another. – Spacecruiser Inquiry, ch. 19
The Will Essence is very important for separation and individuation, as important as the Strength Essence. Strength gives the individual energy and the initiative capacity. Will, on the other hand, is a kind’ of strength, but it is the strength of persistence, of being able to stay with a task till the end. It is the capacity for endurance, persistence and carrying through. It feels like a sense of solidity, of inner support, of determination and confidence. If the Personal Essence feels like “I am” and the Strength Essence feels like “I can,” then the Will Essence feels like “I will.” It is confidence in one’s abilities. – The Pearl Beyond Price, ch. 24
As you stay with this hole, essential Will begins to arise in your consciousness, and is experienced at first as a sense of determination—“I will do that”—and a sense of confidence. As you experience this, you see that what you had previously called “will” on the level of the personality is very different from essential Will. On the essential level, it feels like a sense of inner support that imparts the capacity to persevere effortlessly because one is confident in one’s capacity to do so. Effort, the hallmark of fake will, becomes meaningless on this level because we see that real will means “going with the flow” of one’s Being. If efforting is still present, it means that you are still identified to some extent with the personality. So essential Will is an effortless steadfastness in carrying out the task at hand, resulting from a sense of inner support and confidence. – Facets of Unity, ch. 13
