The desire for merging is not really a desire for another person, it is rather a desire for the merged state, the golden and sweet fullness. Because in the undeveloped infantile condition it was experienced with the mothering person, it becomes associated with being with, or merging with, another person. However, this golden fullness can be experienced alone, without the presence of another person. We will leave substantiation of this assertion for another publication, since it is not central to our investigation here. It is enough to state that many students who work through the fear of merging experience it frequently alone in moments of quietness. – The Void: Inner Spaciousness and Ego Structure, Ch. 12
