Journey from Ego to Grace: Unveiling the True Presence of God
“The Presence of God” is a profound exploration of the spiritual journey toward understanding and experiencing the divine. Adapted from “Heart Dweller,” a collection of writings by A. H. Almaas, the article explores the complexities of seeking God’s presence. It discusses the barriers we face, such as ego and desires, and how surrender and grace can lead to a state of divine union. Almaas emphasizes the importance of letting go of ego-driven actions and aspirations to make space for the divine to fill one’s being
Out of the Way
Though we try hard through various practices, the ego-self remains, veiling divine realization.
Almaas advocates recognizing the ego as the obstacle blocking awareness of our inner sun. Letting go of self-centered desires and efforts opens the heart to grace. We forget the Beloved by grasping at transient pleasures and becoming lost in emotions.
Sin is simply ignorance forgetful of our divine essence, not breaking external commandments. We are deceived by the ego’s false promises, turning from God toward gratification. Yet paradoxically the ego leads us on the journey home.
Every desire reflects an underlying longing for spiritual union. Fumbling in darkness, we unknowingly seek the divine. Ego is the devil’s pawn yet serves a higher purpose in drawing us to God.
No spiritual work we do from egoic motivation brings lasting fulfillment. True spiritual work is surrendering personal will and effort. Stopping the activities of ego creates space for the divine presence to bloom within.
Almaas points to the futility of trying to fill our inner void through ego gratification. Lasting contentment comes only from the grace of remembering and realigning with our essential nature. This profound passage inspires self-reflection on how we block or invite the flowering of our spiritual heart.
